FFS Phase Overview

The FFS phase is conducted in the Apex Level D CE-680A Full Flight Simulator at KFXE. All sessions are sequential — sessions cannot be rearranged. Each session builds on demonstrated proficiency from the prior session. The FFS phase is preceded by the Ground School and CPT phases; no FFS session may begin without Chief Standards Pilot authorization confirming those phases complete.

Session Syllabus — Click to Expand

Each session below shows the full maneuver sequence and the stage gate requirements that must be met before the next session is authorized. Sessions are not interchangeable — they must be completed in order.

FFS Session 1 — Normal Procedures & Garmin G5000 Familiarization (8 hrs)
Level D · 8 hrs
Engine start (normal sequence, FADEC monitoring, starter limits)
Taxi procedures at KFXE: ground control, runway lineup checks, Before Takeoff checklist
Normal takeoff: Vr 138–155 KIAS, initial climb pitch, gear retraction call
Climb to FL370: flap retraction schedule, acceleration altitude, climb checklist
Garmin G5000 familiarization: PFD scan, MFD configuration, autopilot engagement
Cruise configuration: autothrottle engagement (if equipped), cruise checklist, fuel check
Descent planning: TOD calculation, VNAV descent initiation, speed management
Visual approach: Vapp 122–132 KIAS, flap schedule, gear down call
Full-stop landing: touchdown technique, directional control, reverse thrust, brake application
After-landing and shutdown checklists
Stage Gate — Session 1 → Session 2

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Session 2 is authorized:

  • Student demonstrates basic Garmin G5000 display awareness without instructor prompting on PFD scan
  • Takeoff completed within ±5 KIAS of Vr 138–155; gear retraction timely
  • No unsafe flight conditions created; all standard callouts made
  • Session debrief documented; no area graded critically deficient
FFS Session 2 — Instrument Procedures & FMS Proficiency (8 hrs)
Level D · 8 hrs
IFR departure from KFXE: clearance readback, departure checklist, SID compliance
FMS route modification in flight: direct-to, airways entry, alternate airport insertion
Autopilot mode management: altitude capture, VS, IAS, VNAV engagement
Holding: published entry, timing, FMS hold entry, fuel burn in hold
ILS approach coupled: localizer capture, glideslope intercept, DA decision, go-around
ILS approach hand-flown: same sequence, autopilot off at IAF
LPV/RNAV approach: LNAV/VNAV, FMS approach loading, RF legs if applicable
Missed approach: go-around thrust, flap retraction schedule, FMS missed approach procedure
Alternate planning: fuel to alternate, alternate approach briefing
TCAS II: TA annunciation response; RA — immediate compliance, no ATC coordination first
EGPWS/TAWS: terrain pull-up alert — immediate full power, maximum pitch, no configuration changes
Stage Gate — Session 2 → Session 3

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Session 3 is authorized:

  • FMS demonstrated proficient: approach loaded and briefed in the simulator without instructor assistance
  • ILS approaches within ±100 ft altitude, ±5 KIAS, ±½ dot CDI throughout final
  • Missed approach procedure completed correctly from memory
  • TCAS RA response: immediate, correct, within 5 seconds
FFS Session 3 — Engine Failures & Single-Engine Operations (8 hrs)
Level D · 8 hrs
Engine failure below V1 (135–152 KIAS): rejected takeoff — recognition, power idle, maximum braking, stopping distance
Engine failure at exactly V1: continued takeoff — directional control, V2 maintained ±5 KIAS
Single-engine initial climb: SID compliance single-engine, obstacle clearance altitude
Engine shutdown procedure: memory items, checklist, FADEC post-shutdown
Single-engine cruise: altitude capability, drift-down if above single-engine ceiling
Single-engine ILS to DA: autopilot coupled; asymmetric thrust management; rudder trim
Single-engine go-around: power application on one engine; heading control; clean-up schedule
Single-engine full-stop landing: Vref single-engine, touchdown technique, directional control with asymmetric reverse
Engine restart in flight: relight envelope; FADEC-assisted restart; monitoring ITT during relight
Stage Gate — Session 3 → Session 4

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Session 4 is authorized:

  • V1 cut: heading within ±5° after liftoff; V2 maintained ±5 KIAS; no dual engine commanded
  • All engine failure memory items recalled in correct sequence without prompting
  • Single-engine ILS to DA within tolerance: ±100 ft, ±5 KIAS, ±½ dot
  • No unsafe flight condition created during asymmetric power exercises
FFS Session 4 — Abnormal & Emergency Procedures (8 hrs)
Level D · 8 hrs
Engine fire in flight: memory items — thrust lever idle, fire handle pull, extinguisher (first bottle); second bottle timing; single-engine approach
Emergency descent from FL450: recognition, passenger oxygen, Mayday call, descent initiation, target altitude
Rapid decompression: oxygen mask donning (timed — 15 seconds at FL410 useful consciousness); immediate descent
Smoke and fumes: source identification (electrical vs environmental); isolation; smoke goggles; oxygen mask
Electrical emergency: generator failure, essential bus load shedding, avionics priority management
Alternate gear extension: checklist, groundspeed limits, gear indication verification
Brake failure: maximum anti-skid braking; runway remaining assessment; emergency stop
Windshear encounter: EGPWS windshear alert — immediate full thrust, pitch to target, no config changes
GPWS/TAWS pull-up: immediate full power, maximum pitch attitude, flaps as required — do not delay for ATC
Stage Gate — Session 4 → Session 5

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Session 5 is authorized:

  • Engine fire memory items: correct sequence, no omissions, both bottles properly timed
  • Emergency descent initiated within 15 seconds of recognition
  • Oxygen mask donning demonstrated correctly — timing evaluated against useful consciousness window
  • All emergency memory items recalled in sequence without instructor prompting
  • No unsafe flight condition created during any emergency scenario
FFS Session 5 — LOFT, CRM & Final Evaluation (8 hrs)
Level D · 8 hrs
Complete city-pair LOFT: KFXE departure to hub airport (550 NM representative); real-world ATC workload; one injected abnormal en route; weather decision at destination; alternate diversion if required
CRM evaluation: crew communication, shared mental model, decision-making under workload
Mock practical test oral: all ACS areas; limitations recited from memory; emergency procedure knowledge
Final evaluation maneuvers: one normal takeoff, one instrument approach (examiner-selected type), one single-engine approach, one emergency procedure (examiner-selected)
Overall proficiency assessment by FFS instructor against ACS standards
Stage Gate — Session 5 → Aircraft Phase

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Aircraft Phase is authorized:

  • LOFT completed without unsafe conditions; injected abnormal handled correctly
  • Mock oral: all knowledge areas satisfactory; no critical deficiency
  • Final evaluation: no unsatisfactory area — any unsatisfactory triggers remedial FFS before aircraft phase
  • Chief Standards Pilot written authorization issued before aircraft phase begins
Stage Gate — FFS Phase → Aircraft Phase

All of the following must be satisfied and documented by the Chief Standards Pilot before Aircraft Phase is authorized:

  • All 5 FFS sessions completed and documented — no outstanding remedial sessions
  • Final evaluation session (Session 5): no area graded unsatisfactory
  • LOFT scenario completed satisfactorily — CRM evaluation documented
  • Mock practical test oral completed — all knowledge areas satisfactory
  • Chief Standards Pilot written authorization in training record — this authorization is required before any aircraft phase scheduling
Section 3
Remedial FFS Policy

Trigger for remedial session: Any area graded unsatisfactory in a session debrief. The session debrief form identifies the specific deficiency — not the broad Area of Operation, but the specific maneuver or knowledge item. Remedial instruction targets that specific item.

Remedial sequence: (1) Debrief identifying specific deficiency. (2) Additional ground instruction addressing the underlying knowledge gap — minimum 2 hours. (3) Remedial FFS session — minimum 2 hours — targeting the deficient maneuver only. (4) Documented satisfactory performance in the remedial session before next scheduled session proceeds.

Three-remedial threshold: Three consecutive remedial events in the same area without demonstrated progress triggers a mandatory Director of Training review. The Director determines whether the program should continue, the training approach should change, or the program should be terminated. There is no automatic termination — the Director's judgment governs.

Remedial billing: Remedial FFS hours are billed at the Apex published FFS rate. This is not included in the program price. Remedial ground instruction time is included if the instructor is an Apex employee; external specialist instruction is billed separately.
